What is the MEPT program overview?
  • Undergraduate engineering programs rarely address the unique issues introduced by the particle phase.
  • While elements of powder processing may be introduced in some chemical, mechanical or materials engineering curricula, no program provides a comprehensive background in the properties of granular systems or the design and analysis of particle products and processes.
  • The MEPT program fills this gap by providing a rigorous, fundamental and industry-agnostic education in the behavior of particulate systems and the analysis and design of particulate processes and products.
  • The program is intended for engineers, either newly graduated or with industrial experience, who want to develop their expertise in particle technology for industrial application.
  • The program builds on an undergraduate-level background in engineering, including mathematics, chemical thermodynamics, physical chemistry and transport phenomena.
  • In addition to rigorous and comprehensive course work in rate processes, transport, characterization, separations and product engineering, the program’s capstone element is an industrial internship, enabling the student to exit the program with practical, demonstrated particle technology expertise.
  • We expect our students to be highly marketable within the chemical process, biopharmaceutical, materials, consumer products and energy industries worldwide.
What is the MEPT program design?
  • Particles are ubiquitous in industry. The majority of products produced in the chemical, pharmaceutical, materials, consumer products and energy industries either include particles or are made through the agency of particles. Engineers who work in these industries will inevitably find themselves designing, scaling and troubleshooting processes or systems involving particles.
  • Particle technology spans multiple length scales and requires knowledge and skills that cut across boundaries of traditional academic disciplines. Interactions at the molecular length scale result in material properties at the particle length scale which in turn impact performance of processing units or particle-based products at the macroscopic length scale. There are few, if any, academic programs that span these topics with the depth and breadth necessary to prepare engineers to manage industrial problems involving particles. In most cases, these skills are learned on the job. The MEPT program is designed to provide a comprehensive education in particle technology, emphasizing both the underlying fundamental engineering science and application to industrial practice.
  • In addition to learning about the behavior of particulate systems and the analysis and design of particle products and processes, training in this program will enable students to communicate and collaborate across the engineering and scientific disciplines that collectively comprise particle technology. The program is built around the fundamentals of particle process engineering and particle-based product design and engineering.

What is the MEPT program structure?
  • The program was structured to be completed in one year. It requires the completion of:
    • Thirty credits, of which twenty-four are in courses offered at the UD campus in Newark, Delaware.
    • Eighteen credits, encompassed by core courses that cover the key concepts of particle technology.
      • Four of these courses (twelve credits) are presently taught in the fall semester and two courses (six credits) in the spring semester.
      • Two additional courses (six credits), approved as relevant electives.
  • The capstone is the industrial internship (six credits) which is performed with sponsorship from one of a number of participating companies.
  • To facilitate the inclusion of practicing engineers in this program, the program is structured to allow part-time attendance, i.e. fewer than four courses per semester. Lectures can be attended remotely using web conferencing technology, and class assignments and exams can be submitted electronically.
Who administers the MEPT program?
  • The program is administered by the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. The courses are taught by department faculty, including Professors of Practice with many years of industrial experience working in particle technology.

    R. Bertrum Diemer retired as a DuPont Engineering Fellow in 2014 after a forty-year career primarily spent as a corporate authority in the fields of reaction engineering, thermochemistry, population balance modeling and flame aerosol synthesis. This expertise is built on early assignments in consulting, manufacturing, process development, and technical supervision. He holds thirteen U.S. Patents, is the author of thirteen refereed journal articles, and was the recipient of five DuPont Corporate Awards for advances in titania, phosgene, and insecticide manufacture, and for development of thermochemistry tools. He was named a 1997 ACS Hero of Chemistry for his work on a DuPont team that commercialized a new, lower cost, more environmentally friendly phosgene synthesis catalyst. He holds a BSChE from Lehigh University, and both the MChE and PhD degrees from University of Delaware. He is a Delaware-licensed.P.E.

    James N. Michaels worked at Merck & Co. for twenty-one years, retiring in 2014 as Scientific Associate Vice President. He established and directed an industry leading center of excellence in materials science and particle technology. This department supported all product sectors, including small molecules, vaccines and biologics, sterile products, consumer care, and animal health. In addition, he has had a 20-year association with the International Fine Particle Research Institute (IFPRI), serving for ten years as its Technical Chair and more recently as Vice President, Industry-Academia Liaison. He holds nine U.S. Patents, is the author of fifty publications, and was the recipient of the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, in chemical engineering, a diploma from Imperial College, University of London, and a Sc.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in chemical engineering.
What are the MEPT degree requirements?
MEPT is a professional degree program generated by industry demand. The program requires:
  • The completion of thirty credits, comprising six core courses, two relevant approved elective courses and a ten week internship
  • Students to maintain an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • A grade of B- or better in a core course requirement
  • A grade of B- or better in an elective requirement to remain eligible for Departmental funding
  • That no course used to meet degree requirements may be taken Pass/Fail
Upon successful completion of the program, the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering will confer the student with the degree: Master of Engineering in Particle Technology (EGME : PART-ME).

The program was designed to be completed in one year, however, other options are available with Program Director approval:
  • Part-time learning, with an anticipated program duration of two years
  • Distance learning
  • Transfer of up to 9 graduate course credits from another institution or program to fulfill MEPT relevant electives (credit transfers must also be approved by the Graduate Committee and University's Office of Graduate Studies)
Do you have to be a full-time student?
  • No. MEPT has a part-time option available and there is a flexible deadline for graduation, with Advisor approval.
Do you have to take all courses at the University of Delaware campus?
  • No. MEPT has a distance learning option available and an opportunity for a transfer of elective credits, with Advisor approval.
Who should apply?
  • We encourage you to apply if you believe you meet the qualifications.
  • We read every application individually and admit using a portfolio approach. We consider all factors when making an admission decision and no single factor will guarantee or disqualify you from admission.
What are the minimum admission requirements for MEPT?
  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university. A minimum undergraduate grade-point average in engineering, science and mathematics courses of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • This degree may be in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, chemistry, materials science or physics disciplines, if the undergraduate program includes engineering thermodynamics, calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and transport phenomena (fluid mechanics, heat and mass transport).
  • Individuals holding non-U.S. degrees may request a review for determination as to equivalency of a four-year U.S. degree. The accreditation of the institution which granted the degree, courses taken, grades and work history in the field of the earned degree are all taken into account when making an equivalency decision.
  • A minimum of three letters and recommendations of strong support from faculty or supervisors.
  • A minimum score of 155 (700) on the quantitative portion of the GRE. Candidates with substantive industrial experience, those holding terminal degrees (MD, JD, PhD, EdD), those with clear proficiency in undergraduate course performance, or those submitting LSAT or MCAT scores may request a waiver.
  • Non-native speakers of English (foreign applicants) are required to achieve a minimum score of 600 on the TOEFL, 250 for the CTOEFL, 100 for TOEFL iBT, 7.5 on the IELTS, unless proof of having earned a degree in the United States or a country where English is the primary language is submitted. International Applicants may apply for a Conditional Admission Program (CAP) which allows an applicant to complete the University of Delaware English Language Institute’s program instead of taking the TOEFL or IELTS test.
  • Candidates may take up to 9 credit hours of coursework as an Engineering Outreach Non-Degree (EGORND) student while studying for the GRE exam and/or making a final decision to apply for MEPT.

When should I apply?
  • Candidates are admitted on a rolling basis until the program is full. Graduate Program Application dates for Fall admission:
    • Rolling Admission Decisions Begin: January 6. Response due dates vary.
    • Deadline to be considered for Departmental Funding: March 1. Response due dates vary.
    • International Applicants Final Deadline: May 1. Final response date is June 1.
    • University Final Application Deadline: July 1.

How do I apply?
Can I apply for more than one degree program?
  • Yes.
  • Each application must contain separately uploaded materials and separately created/submitted recommendations.
  • You will need to choose “Create Account” each time you wish to submit a new application.
What is included in the application?
An application consists of the following:
  • Resume/C.V.: All applicants are required to submit a Resume or Curriculum Vitae.
  • Graduate Application Essay: All applicants are required to submit a Personal Statement.
  • Transcript(s): All applicants are required to upload unofficial academic transcript(s) (post-high school institutions only).
  • GRE Test Score: Our program requires a GRE. You cannot upload these as they must be sent directly from ETS; however, you will be asked to self-report this information.
  • TOEFL or IEFLT Score: English proficiency is required of all International applicants prior to beginning graduate coursework at the University of Delaware. You cannot upload these as they must be sent directly from ETS or IELTS; however, you will be asked to self-report this information.
  • Recommendations: Our program requires three (3) recommendations, one (1) of the recommendations from University faculty (unless a waiver is granted).
  • Supplemental or Additional Documents: MEPT does not require any supplemental documents. Some applicants send non-required documents, such as published chapters, etc.
  • Interview: Some applicants may be invited to participate in a telephone interview (or in person, if possible).
How can I change something on the application that I submitted online?
  • You can’t. Note: Once you press submit, you can’t make any changes to the information submitted on your application.
  • You can add or update the following documents to your Application Status Page:
    • Resume or CV
    • Unofficial Transcript
    • Graduate Application Essay (Purpose Statement or writing sample)
    • Supplemental Documents (if applicable)
When will I know if I have been admitted or rejected?
  • MEPT has a rolling admission. The Admissions Committee will continue to review applications until the class is full.
  • Notification is sent via an email that a decision or update has been posted to your Application Status Page.
  • If you do not receive an email, the Admissions Committee may be waiting on information in your application or you may have been placed on a wait list.
When and what should I prepare for submission on the application?
  • The most common mistake is not beginning the application process early enough for the submission of all documents before your application deadline. You can begin the application process at any time and upload documents as they become available. You do not need to wait for recommendations to submit your application; however, the Application Review Committee cannot make a decision until they have received three recommendations so it is in your best interest to submit your material and recommenders as early as possible.
  • Prepare your current Resume or Curriculum Vitae (C.V.). Document your prior work experience, publications, honors and awards received and a summary of your educational credentials.
  • Prepare a Purpose Statement: there is no set page length for essays. We are looking for personal, insightful, specific and brief essays.

  • Obtain your Unofficial Transcript(s) from each institution of higher education that you have attended. Go to the Registrar’s page of your home institution to print and scan an unofficial copy (or student copy). Do not mail transcripts during the applicant stage. If admitted, you will then be asked to submit official transcript(s).
  • Unless waived or applying under the Engineering Outreach Program (EGORND), submit an official GRE score at the time of your application; however, applicants who have not yet received their official score should list their unofficial score(s) on the application.     Tip — The ETS University of Delaware institution code is “5811.” You only need to submit the university code of 5811. No department code is needed for our institution.
  • Unless waived or applying under the Conditional Admission Program (CAP), international applicants (whose undergraduate degree is not from a country where English is the primary language), should submit a TOEFL or IELTS score at the time of the application; however, applicants who have not yet received their official score should list their unofficial score(s) on the application.   • Request a Letter of Recommendation from faculty, supervisors or employers (one must be from a Professor, unless a waiver is approved). You will be asked to enter your expected recommender’s information within the application. We offer further guidance on successfully submitting and receiving recommendations on the Graduate Office website:

    Tip — speak to your recommenders first and request their preferred email address. You are required to provide names and email addresses for your recommenders. Forms will be emailed directly by the Graduate Office online application system to your recommenders with instructions on how to return the completed forms electronically. Your Application Status Page shows if your recommenders have been notified, started, or completed the recommendation on your behalf. If you need to remind your recommender to complete and submit their recommendation, please go to your application status page, click to edit or view your application, and then find the recommendation link in the lower left of the page.
  • MEPT does not require any Supplemental Documents. If you have material that you would like to submit, you can submit an electronic copy in the area called “Additional Document Uploads” prior to submitting your application:
  • If you are selected for a phone interview (or an in person interview, if possible), prepare verbal responses with regard to your application material, including your academic credentials and Purpose Statement.

    Tip — if you are selected for an interview, you may be asked to provide additional information directly to MEPT such as a photo ID.
  • Please NOTE the following:
    • All documents are uploaded directly to the application system. It is expected that you prepare a scanned or pdf version of each of your documents.
    • Please do not mail any documents. If admitted, you will receive notice from the Graduate Office if you are required to submit any documents by mail.
    • If any material in your Application is found to have been altered or falsified, the Graduate Office reserves the right of expulsion.
  • The Application Fee ($75) can be paid online by credit card or by check via postal mail (applications cannot be processed until payment is received or a fee waiver is approved).
What does a Conditional Admission mean?
  • All offers of admission are conditional upon verifying the information you claimed in your application.
