Melissa St. Amand

Melissa graduated summa cum laude with dual degrees in Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2007. After obtaining her BS degree, Melissa worked as a process engineer with Genzyme before joining the graduate program at the University of Delaware in 2008. Melissa is an accomplished accordion player and is a fan of 80's music. She has also never been beaten at Friends' trivia.

Research Description

The primary aim of Melissa's work is to establish the foundation for effective online, real time control of glycosylation patterns on monoclonal antibodies. Online control of glycosylation will be achieved via the active monitoring and control of key process variables. Her approach is based on a combination of multi-scale modeling, hierarchical control, and state estimation. The experimental validation, proceeding simultaneously with the theoretical development, involves a novel bioreactor system equipped with an OPC interface.
